The Fonda Fish Farm is a family business that has its roots in the area of the coastal town of Piran. The head office lies on a strategic location surrounded by clean water and a strong sea current: the ideal breeding conditions for the best fish. The result of their work is breeding a superior whitefish - the seabass. First of all, the top-level quality is a result of selection of young fish fry (?spawn) of the best origin and breeding in free-floating meshed cages. Clean water at the carefully selected site in the Slovenian sea, mild climate and other wholesome factors of the Piran Bay have an entirely advantageus/beneficient influence on the growth of the fish fry/young fish. Carefully selected food of highest quality for the fish, manual feeding and above all, strict absence of any toxic agents against net overgrowing are/ represent additional factors that make the Fonda-bred sea bass of Piran a superb story in gastronomy that is recognized by most renown connoisseurs in Europe. Therefore the Piran sea bass is a superior fish that satisfies the most demanding expectations.
The business of the Fonda Fish Farm also comprises mussel farming (ital. peoci, vulg. pedoci), with a tradition of several years: mussels are bred on floating lines /ropes attached to buoys, floating freely in seawater.
Visitors will learn about the secrets of fish farming, ranging from the selection of fry/young fish, manual feeding and their exceptional concern for environment and healthy growth of several generations of fishes. They may also discover and experience the specialty of the Piran sea bass if they decide to complete their visit with a fish tasting.
The company Prosub, d.o.o. was established in 2004 and is engaged in mussel farming and fishery on the Slovenian coast. Mussel farms where Mediterranean mussel is farmed are positioned in three farming locations: the Strunjan Landscape Park, Piran Bay fishing preserve, and Debeli rtič Cape. Some areas are sheltered from the NE bora wind (Northeast), others from the south wind sirocco ('scirocco'), so mussel gathering is possible in all weather conditions. The total farming area covers approximately 13 ha (hectares), the current annual production output is about 150 tons. The company invests all the revenue in new farming lines, aiming to achieve an output of ca. 500 tons p.a. in the next three years.
In addition to mussel farming they also gather other shellfish growing freely along the Slovenian coast: the clams 'warty venus' (Venus verrucosa - tartufo di mare, ladinka) and Noah's Ark shells (Arca noae, mussoli - 'mušol'). A great deal of this precious seafood is offered by the best Slovenian and Italian restaurants.
In 2010, they opened a dispatch and depuration centre for mussels in Izola. They also cooperate with Italian mussel farmers and gatherers, so that in case any toxins are detected in mussels in one area, they are still able to assure an undisturbed supply of seafood.
Visitors will be given the opportunity to view the mussel farms (from) above and under the sea level, using diving equipment and guided by diving instructors who will keep a vigilant eye on them.
The private entrepreneur Mitja Petrič, based in Izola, started with mussel farming in 2005 and has now reached the phase of intensive development and production growth. The core activity of his business is the farming of Mediterranean mussels, his farms are positioned on three sites: Debeli rtič, Strunjan and Sečovlje. The accompanying activities are mussel gathering (warty venus, Noah's Ark shells), services of divers, and underwater construction works.
In addition to keeping, expanding and modernizing his mussel farms, another main goal of the entrepreneur is to satisfy the needs of his customers and consumers with the supplies of wholesome, top-level and quality sea food that is produced with modern and environmentally friendly technology.
His team will be pleased to show their farms to visitors and unveil the trade of mussel farming.
