In the scope of the project The making of »Fishing Holidays« programme, which is co-financed by the European Union and the Republic of Slovenia in the frame of the European Fisheries Fund: for a sustainable development of fisheries, we have gathered numerous local entities and sole proprietors who are operating in the coastal municipalities Izola, Piran and City of Koper and willing to show to visitors their work techniques, to disclose their trade secrets of fishing and fish farming, and offer their products for tasting in a traditional way or high culinary style.
Slovenians have got a small share of the sea but we are very attached to it, with strong economic ties. The Slovenian Istria abounds in small businesses for which the contact with the sea is their daily bread. The most common activities are marine fishing and aquaculture, shellfish farming, catering and hospitality, including passenger transport by sea for tourist as the most recent trend.
Living with the sea is something particularly charming and unique, but also hard at times. The unpredictability of weather is mirrored in incessant changeability of working conditions, which makes every-day work difficult and demands interaction and adaptation from people at all times. However, the love of the sea is what binds people to persist in their trade, as hard as it may be.
We are positive that to feel the sea and the life with and devoted to the sea is a memorable, first-hand experience for visitors coming from distant countries. Getting to know the specific activities that are connected with the sea is remarkably instructive and useful for visitors of any age group. We would like to share these sensations and insights with the people who wish to experience our sea, the life at sea, and learn about the living world beneath the surface.
The network of our cooperating partners will constantly grow, we will supplement and upgrade it in terms of new contents, aiming to show the life at sea and by the sea in a most interesting, informative and still authentic way. We will also include the activities that are not directly linked with the sea, but they take place in the area of operation of the Coastal action group »Ribič (Fisherman)« .
